About On the Road to Wellness

For over 35 years, On the Road to Wellness (OTRTW) has provided free peer support services to adults ages 18 and older who are navigating mental health recovery, wellness, and life challenges.

We currently operate two Peer Support Centers, one in Manchester, New Hampshire and one in Derry, New Hampshire, along with our Step-Up Step-Down Residential Program in Manchester.

OTRTW is a peer-run, recovery-centered organization. This means our work is grounded in lived experience, mutual respect, self-determination, and the belief that people are capable of healing, growing, and building meaningful lives with the right support.

What Is a Peer Support Specialist?

A Peer Support Specialist is a trained professional with lived experience of mental health and/or substance use challenges who uses that experience to support others in their own wellness journey.

Rather than approaching support from a clinical or hierarchical role, Peer Support Specialists walk beside members as equals. They offer connection, encouragement, acceptance, hope, and practical support rooted in shared understanding.

Our Workplace Culture

At OTRTW, our culture is shaped by compassion, flexibility, teamwork, and a strong belief in recovery. Staff are expected to bring professionalism and accountability to the work while also honoring the deeply human nature of peer support.

We value:

  • Lived experience as a strength
  • Respectful and person-centered communication
  • Emotional safety and mutual support
  • Collaboration across programs and sites
  • Growth, feedback, and continued learning
  • Recovery-friendly workplace practices
  • Strong boundaries, ethical decision-making, and reliability

This work is meaningful and rewarding, but it can also be emotionally complex. Because of that, we place importance on supervision, team communication, self-awareness, and supporting staff in maintaining their own wellness while serving others.

What We Offer to Members

All OTRTW services are free. No insurance, referral, or ID is required. Members may walk in and out as they choose.

Our services focus on recovery, community, connection, and self-determination through:

Daily Support Groups
Multiple groups are offered daily in both Manchester and Derry, primarily focused on mental health, wellness, recovery, coping skills, connection, and personal growth.

Virtual Options
Groups are available by Zoom to support remote access for members who cannot attend in person.

One-on-One Peer Support
Private, goal-oriented peer support is available by request to help members explore challenges, identify needs, build skills, and strengthen wellness.

PATH Program
PATH, which stands for Practical Actions Toward Harmony, is OTRTW’s member-driven wellness planning program. Members work with an assigned Peer Support Specialist to develop a personalized wellness plan based on the eight dimensions of wellness.

Holistic Wellness Program
Based out of our Derry location, this program offers opportunities such as meditation, breathwork, movement for all bodies, reiki, sound bowl healing, and other wellness-based activities.

Outreach Program
Peers meet individuals where they are, whether in the community, during difficult moments, or while navigating barriers to support. Outreach focuses on compassion, connection, and linkage to care.

Off-Site Programming
OTRTW partners with local agencies and community organizations to provide peer support, resource navigation, and wellness-based programming beyond our centers.

Step-Up Step-Down Residential Program
Our SUSD program is a voluntary, 90-day, peer-run residential program in Manchester. It offers short-term mental health stabilization, recovery planning, and transitional support in a compassionate, home-like environment. The program is staffed 24/7 by Certified Peer Support Specialists.
