Shop Foreman

Primary Objective:

The Shop Foreman leads the day-to-day operations of the sign fabrication shop, overseeing a team of fabricators, welders, painters, and installers to ensure signs are built safely, on schedule, and to Saxton Sign Co. quality standards. This role combines hands-on shop work with supervisory responsibility, coordinating production schedules, maintaining equipment, enforcing safety protocols, and serving as the primary point of contact between shop staff and management on daily production issues.

Job Responsibilities:

Plan, assign, and supervise daily work orders across fabrication, welding, painting, assembly, and installation prep to meet production deadlines.

Read and interpret job tickets, blueprints, engineering drawings, and permit specifications to ensure signs are built to exact dimensions and code requirements.

Train, mentor, and evaluate shop personnel; provide hands-on guidance on fabrication techniques, equipment use, and quality standards.

Enforce OSHA safety regulations and company safety policies; conduct safety briefings and ensure proper use of PPE, machinery, and lifting equipment.

Inspect work in progress and completed signage for quality, structural integrity, and adherence to client specifications before release for installation.

Coordinate with the Production Manager, Sales, and Design teams on scheduling, material needs, and job priorities.

Maintain shop equipment (welders, brakes, routers, CNC equipment, paint booths, lifts) and schedule preventive maintenance or repairs as needed.

Track and manage inventory of raw materials, hardware, and consumables; place or request orders to avoid production delays.

Maintain accurate production records, time tracking, and job costing documentation.

Troubleshoot production issues and resolve bottlenecks to keep jobs moving on schedule.

Uphold a clean, organized, and code-compliant shop environment.

Job Requirements:

5+ years of experience in sign fabrication, metal fabrication, or a related trade, including prior lead or supervisory experience.

Strong working knowledge of fabrication methods and materials, including aluminum, steel, acrylic, and vinyl.

Proficiency with shop equipment such as welders, brakes, shears, CNC routers, and hand/power tools.

Ability to read technical drawings, blueprints, and permit sets.

Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to train, motivate, and hold a team accountable.

Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and shop safety best practices.

Basic computer skills for scheduling, email, and production tracking software.

Forklift and/or aerial lift certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).

High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or technical certification a plus.

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record preferred.

Physical Requirements: 

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 75 lbs occasionally with assistance.

Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work on your feet for extended periods.

Comfortable working at heights and with power tools, welding equipment, and heavy machinery.

Ability to work in a shop environment with exposure to noise, fumes, dust, and varying temperatures.
