Certified Nurse Midwife

Job Purpose

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is responsible for providing compassionate, patient-centered care to women throughout their lives, with a special focus on pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive health. Working both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, the CNM conducts assessments, develops care plans, performs clinical procedures, and helps address community health challenges through education, preventive care, and coordination with local resources.

Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Prenatal Care
    • Conduct initial and ongoing obstetric assessments
    • Order and interpret prenatal labs, ultrasounds, and diagnostic tests
    • Identify high-risk conditions and coordinate referrals to Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) or Adelante Healthcare OBGYN physicians
  2. Intrapartum Care
    • Manage labor and delivery for low-risk patients
    • Perform spontaneous vaginal deliveries
    • Recognize complications and escalate care appropriately
    • Collaborate with physicians and hospital-based teams
  3. Postpartum Care
    • Postpartum follow-up, including physical recovery and mental health screenings
    • Provide counseling on and initiate contraception, including LARC 
    • Coordinate transition to ongoing primary care
  4. Gynecologic and Women’s Healthcare
    • Conduct well-woman exams and preventive screenings
    • Cervical cancer screenings and STI testing
    • Diagnose and manage common gynecologic conditions
    • Provide family planning services
  5. Clinical Collaboration
    • Coordinate referrals to specialty care, including MFM, OBGYN, and behavioral health
    • Work closely with behavioral health, nutrition, case management, and primary care teams
  6. Quality and Reporting
    • Partner with the integrated care team to improve Care Delivery Integration and identify/close any care gaps
    • Participate in quality improvement, peer reviews and clinical reporting initiatives
  7. Other duties as assigned

Professional & Technical Knowledge:

  • Possesses the equivalent of extensive formal training as a Nurse Practitioner and Midwife, including an understanding of the application of the theory and practices of the profession to the operations of the organization, usually in the form of a degree in Nursing and Certification as a Nurse-Midwife.

  • Possesses an understanding of the trade/profession at a level that allows the employee to select methods for others to use (from those already in existence in the profession).

Continuing Education: 

  • Maintain ongoing CME credits

Licenses & Certifications: 

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Arizona
  • Certification by the American College of Nurse-Midwives
  • Active DEA license or ability to apply for license prior to or at time of hire
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license and active motor insurance
  • Certification to perform cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Health Care Professional (CPR) and AED through courses that follow the guidelines from the American Heart Association and the Red Cross (cognitive and skills evaluations)
  • Valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the State of Arizona.

Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrates necessary proficiency with all electronic clinical systems, including EHR and scheduling systems, in use at the company. 

General Development:

  • Selects from established alternatives and modifies approaches in response to situations encountered.  
  • Displays basic organizational skills in order to self-prioritize and organize own work.
  • Able to effectively communicate opinions drawn from conclusions using inference and logic.

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for long periods of time, is required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb steps/stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; smell; manage stress as it relates to essential job functions.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance and may occasionally be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time when traveling to various clinic sites.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be subject to health hazards (contagious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, etc.) when working in the clinic area.
