Job Description 

MMI Industrial & Steel is excited to announce an opening for the Director of Field Development and Project Controls position. This role is pivotal in driving excellence and efficiency across our steel and industrial service operations. This is an on-site position located at our headquarters that emphasizes a hands-on approach to leadership and direct collaboration with our project teams. This is not a remote job opportunity.

The Director of Field Development and Project Controls is tasked with strengthening our field execution capabilities, overseeing project controls, enhancing the operational technology systems that impact our field operations, and spearheading strategic growth initiatives. The selected candidate will be instrumental in improving predictability and quality of our field performance, expanding our service offerings, and increasing the workforce capacity essential for delivering top-tier steel, industrial, and millwright-style construction projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and standardize project controls processes focusing on cost, schedule, productivity, and risk management.
  • Produce accurate forecasts, variance analysis, and performance dashboards to enhance decision-making processes.
  • Ensure a clear and documented handoff from estimating teams to field teams to commissioning, enhancing project execution.
  • Ensure consistent and integrity-rich reporting of field data across all projects.
  • Oversee the configuration, optimization, and functional ownership of operational technology systems used by field teams.
  • Collaborate with IT, PMO, and field leadership to ensure technology systems adequately support real-time reporting and field data accuracy.
  • Evaluate and recommend technological enhancements that improve efficiency, accuracy, and execution in field operations.
  • Define necessary capabilities for field personnel in steel and industrial services, supporting recruitment and onboarding processes.
  • Develop tools and frameworks to improve field readiness, commissioning processes, and performance standards.
  • Enhance field safety, consistency, and workforce effectiveness.
  • Utilize industry relationships to identify and develop new business opportunities within the industrial sector.
  • Provide expertise during early customer engagements and assist in shaping project scopes.
  • Support high-quality proposal development with insights grounded in field execution capabilities.
  • Maintain and expand a predictable business pipeline valued between $10M-$15M annually.
  • Align project controls and reporting mechanisms across different service lines to ensure unified operational visibility.
  • Offer strategic insights and execution data to senior leadership to support organizational planning and quarterly execution strategies.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Master’s degree preferred in MBA, Engineering Management, Construction Management, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in construction, steel fabrication/installation, industrial services, or a related field.
  • Proven track record in field operations, including commissioning and project execution.
  • Demonstrated expertise in project controls and analytics.
  • Experience with operational technology systems implementation and management for field operations.
  • Experience in building and developing field teams, particularly in millwright, industrial, or multi-trade environments.
  • Strong network connections within the industrial construction and field services sectors.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams without formal authority.
  • In-depth knowledge of project controls (cost, schedule, risk, forecasting).
  • Robust field construction experience, especially within steel, industrial, or millwright settings.
  • Hands-on experience with field-facing operational technology systems.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and translate insights into actionable improvements in the field.
  • Ability to influence across functions without requiring direct authority and be a strong communicator to field teams, project managers, and clients.
  • Capability to develop field talent and implement stringent operational standards effectively.
  • Strategic and growth-oriented mindset with a knack for identifying new service opportunities and guiding early pursuit efforts.
