Position Summary:
Berry Metal Company is seeking a Laborer for our facility located in La Porte, IN.
This position supports daily production operations by coordinating the retrieval and preparation of materials for jobs, as well as performing general shop support duties. This role assists machine operators, welders, and fabricators while safely operating shop equipment, hand tools, power tools, overhead cranes, and forklifts as needed. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting quality standards and production goals in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform general labor tasks, including moving materials, loading and unloading items, and supporting production needs.
- Clean, organize, stage, measure, mark, and cut materials using appropriate tools.
- Assist machine operators, welders, and fabricators as needed.
- Safely operate overhead crane, forklift, and basic hand and power tools
- Follow company safety and quality standards, report unsafe conditions, and meet production goals.
- Maintain accurate job records by completing required paperwork and entering information into the ERP system.
- Assist with shipping, receiving, packaging, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in a manufacturing, steel, or industrial environment preferred.
- Ability to use measurement tools, including calipers, tape measures, squares, and micrometers.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, welding symbols, SOPs, and job paperwork; ERP experience preferred.
- Basic mechanical aptitude, basic math skills, and ability to safely operate saws, shop equipment, and shot blast equipment.
- Welding experience is a plus.
- Reliable, punctual, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and quality-focused team player.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 60 pounds.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, feel, grasp, and operate welding equipment, hand tools, and measuring instruments.
- May be required to work in confined spaces, awkward positions, or elevated areas.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as a welding helmet, gloves, safety glasses, respirator, and protective clothing.
- Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to noise, heat, sparks, fumes, and other elements typical of a welding and fabrication environment.
