$80,000–$160,000/annual

Job Description: IS4S is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer to support the development of embedded software for Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (APNT) systems working on-site in our Auburn, AL or Huntsville, AL location. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of navigation algorithms, sensor interfaces, platform integration, and software testing for resilient navigation solutions operating in challenging environments, including conditions where GPS/GNSS may be degraded, denied, or unavailable.

This role offers the opportunity to work across the embedded software development lifecycle, from algorithm implementation and hardware interfacing to integration, testing, and performance evaluation. The ideal candidate has strong modern C++ programming skills, experience developing software in Linux environments, and a commitment to producing reliable, maintainable, and well-tested software.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain embedded software components for assured PNT systems using modern C++.

Implement and support navigation algorithms that process data from inertial sensors, GPS/GNSS receivers, clocks, and other navigation sources.

Develop and maintain software interfaces to sensors, embedded hardware, and host platforms.

Integrate software components with navigation hardware and platform systems, troubleshooting hardware/software interface issues.

Develop and execute unit, integration, and system-level tests to verify software functionality and performance.

Analyze test results, investigate defects, and support debugging and performance optimization.

Use Git-based version control, automated build systems, and CI/CD pipelines to support software quality and repeatable development workflows.

Collaborate with systems, hardware, and navigation engineers to develop, integrate, and demonstrate assured PNT capabilities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

Experience developing software in modern C++, including object-oriented programming, standard library features, and sound software design practices.

Experience developing, building, debugging, and testing software in a Linux environment.

Proficiency with Git or an equivalent modern version control system, including branching, merging, and collaborative development workflows.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated software build, test, and integration processes.

Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to write clear, maintainable, and well-documented software.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with embedded software development on Linux-based platforms.

Familiarity with navigation algorithms, sensor fusion, inertial navigation systems (INS), GPS/GNSS, or other PNT technologies.

Experience interfacing with hardware using serial communications, Ethernet, SPI, I²C, CAN, or similar protocols.

Experience with unit testing frameworks and software quality tools, such as static analysis, code coverage, and automated linting.

Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitLab CI/CD.

Familiarity with Python or MATLAB for algorithm prototyping, test automation, and data analysis.

Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, embedded system integration, or field testing.
