Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures.
- Set up and break down operatory post-treatment.
- Take dental radiographs (x-rays) as prescribed by the dentist.
- Manage infection control - prepare and sterilize instruments and equipment.
- Provide patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling).
- Educate patients on appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing, and nutritional counseling).
- Take impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth).
- Perform office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer.
- Communicate with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing, and ordering supplies).
- Help to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; higher degree in dental assisting/medical care is preferable.
- Certification or associate degree in an accredited dental assisting program.
- Proven experience as a dental assistant; minimum of 3+ years in a dental setting.
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations.
- Ability to perform regulated non-surgical tasks like coronal polishing is a plus.
- Excellent understanding of dental hygiene procedures.
- Knowledge of dental instruments and sterilization methods.
- Exceptional customer service skills and a friendly demeanor.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented and professional attitude.
- Efficiency and the ability to work well under pressure.
- Understanding of medical and dental terminology.
