Position Summary:
The Industrial Hygienist supports the assessment, mitigation, and documentation of environmental health and safety risks across various industries. This position ranges from entry-level trainees to experienced subject matter experts. Depending on level, responsibilities may include environmental sampling, hazardous material inspections, data analysis, report writing, project coordination, and technical training. The role may involve both field and office-based work and requires increasing levels of technical knowledge, certifications, and autonomy with each level.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
All Levels:
- Participate in ongoing training programs and field mentoring.
- Perform environmental sampling (air, water, dust, soil, building materials).
- Conduct asbestos, lead, mold, and other hazardous materials investigations.
- Use direct-reading instruments for IAQ (e.g., Graywolf, Dust Meter, 4 Gas Meter).
- Ensure adherence to safety and regulatory protocols.
- Travel to job sites; maintain field notes and daily logs.
- Operate company or personal vehicles to reach job locations.
Entry to Level I:
- Assist in limited asbestos/lead surveys and abatement monitoring.
- Perform basic water and fungal sampling (air-o-cell, tape lift, etc.).
- Support senior hygienists in sample collection and equipment usage.
Level II:
- Independently conduct moderately complex asbestos and lead investigations.
- Perform lead-safe housing assessments and risk assessments.
- Develop fungal remediation work plans with recommendations.
- Begin contributing to data analysis and final report preparation.
- Assist project managers with low-complexity projects.
- Serve as on-site trainer for junior staff.
Level III:
- Lead complex projects across multiple specialties (asbestos, lead, mold, IAQ).
- Coordinate field operations and contribute to client communications.
- Prepare technical specifications and work plans for remediation projects.
- Represent the company at job meetings and regulatory inspections.
- Assist in formal training programs or courses (if qualified).
- Participate in Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), if applicable.
Senior Level:
- Serve as a subject matter expert and thought leader internally and externally.
- Oversee major inspections and develop comprehensive project deliverables.
- Coordinate large-scale or high-visibility projects with limited oversight.
- Provide mentorship and strategic direction to field teams.
- Assist with business development or program expansion within the organization.
- Manage project schedules and deploy field personnel in coordination with leadership.

Required Education, Certifications, and Licenses:
Minimum:
- Valid driver’s license with proof of insurance
- High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s preferred for all levels)
Preferred/Required by Level:
- Bachelor’s degree in STEM discipline (preferred for all levels)

- Asbestos Building Inspector
- Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor
- Asbestos Investigator (AI)
- City of Philadelphia Certified Asbestos Project Inspector (API)
- NIOSH 582
- Lead RRP
- Lead Dust Sampling Technician
- Lead Inspector / Risk Assessor
- Asbestos Management Planner (preferred Level III/Senior)
- Asbestos Project Designer (preferred Level III/Senior)
- Philadelphia Lab License (preferred)
- Member of Asbestos Analyst Registry (AAR)
- Professional certifications (Senior level):
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, crawling, climbing, squatting, and reaching.
- Work may occur in indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in challenging conditions.
- Must be detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to work independently or on teams.

This is a career-path role designed to grow with the individual as they gain certifications, licenses, and experience. Individuals will be expected to progressively take on more responsibility and technical leadership as they advance.
