We emphasize that this is not a remote job; the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite at our facilities to engage directly with our diverse projects and innovative engineering solutions.
As an integral part of our engineering team, the Controls Engineer will focus on the development, implementation, and optimization of high-power motor controls, drives, and other power conversion systems. This position will primarily support our companies Aerospace and Defense Technologies sector, contributing to unique and complex projects that often involve direct applications for US Navy and other Department of Defense customers. Our ideal candidate is someone who is not only technically proficient but also enthusiastically participates in the hands-on aspects of engineering, from design to deployment and testing.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop technical specifications and designs for low to high power motor controls, drives, and active front end rectifiers.
- Lead and supervise portions of project electrical and control system designs, potentially mentoring and overseeing small teams of senior and junior engineers.
- Efficiently transform high-level project requirements into detailed plans and executions with minimal supervision, demonstrating technical judgement and creativity.
- Regularly prepare for and participate in design reviews, ensuring thorough evaluation and refinement of engineering plans.
- Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineers to architect and troubleshoot functional systems.
- Supervise and mentor junior engineers and technicians when necessary, fostering a supportive and productive team environment.
- Engage in continuous learning and skills development to maintain and enhance project contributions and personal expertise.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science or advanced degree from an accredited university in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a closely related field with an electrical concentration, such as Computer Engineering or Robotics Engineering.
- Minimum 10 plus years of practical technical experience focused on motor controls and power conversion subsystems, including design, development, analysis, simulation, and testing.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Department of Defense Security Clearance. Active clearances are preferred but not a prerequisite.
- US citizenship is required due to government contract requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of three-phase brushless motors and control systems, including advanced modulation techniques and flux estimation.
- Experience designing motor controls and drive circuit layouts for optimized performance in regards to noise, EMI/EMC, and thermal management.
- Proficient with CAD, Simulation, and Analysis tools such as Altium Designer, SPICE, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MathCAD, MATLAB, and similar software.
- Skilled in using test equipment relevant to motor controls and power electronics, such as oscilloscopes, dynamometers, and spectrum analyzers.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the capability to produce detailed documentation and deliver effective presentations.
- Practical experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
