Preventive Therapy
Dental Hygienists are expected to work effectively with the doctors to act as the “preventive therapist”. This means the hygienist becomes the source of information and provider of the menu of preventive services. Hygienists are expected to utilize the full menu of preventative services to treat our patients with the best care possible.
Dental hygienists are responsible for performing procedures such as prophylaxis cleanings, periodontal treatments, initial and periodic exams, and charting findings. Hygienists are also tasked with applying Fluoride Varnish, sealants, and de-sensitizing materials. Hygienists are also expected to have knowledge of and have the ability to assist or perform basic restorative procedures like no-prep flowable composite fillings.
Dental Hygienists are also expected to be competent in gathering all pertinent records when coordinating treatment with the doctors. This means taking all x-rays (bitewings, periapical, and panoramic), periodontal charting, and intra- and extra-oral photographs. Additionally Hygienists must be proficient in utilizing the iTero 3D digital scanner.
Hygienists must also take an active role in nutritional counseling and oral hygiene instructions. Hygienists are expected to be able to communicate and offer materials and therapy for various dental issues like fluoride and dry mouth supplements.
Periodontal Therapist
Hygienists need to embrace their role as the first line of defense of each patient’s overall health and well being. Many patients see their Hygienist more often than their primary care physicians. This is why hygienists must be competent in reviewing and updating patient’s medical records and prescription information. Hygienists must also be able to communicate and coordinate with the patients, doctors in our office, and other members of our patients’ medical team.
Periodontal health is a cornerstone of both dental and overall health. Our practice strives to do the right thing for every patient every time we interact with them. This means that Hygienists need to be proficient in performing periodontal procedures such as scaling and root planing. Our office follows ADA guidelines regarding recommendations for when a patient’s condition warrants performing these types of procedures.
Hygienists should have a working knowledge of both orthodontic and occlusal principles and how they affect patients’ periodontal condition. Hygienists should be able to discuss malocclusion and solutions to these problems.
Patient Treatment Advocate
Hygienists are expected to build rapport with patients via competence, honesty, and empathy. Often patients have complex problems that they may not be aware of. Our Hygienists need to work with our doctors to be able to identify and explain treatment options to our patients.
Hygienists must be open to implementing new technologies that will help give our patients the ability to make informed decisions regarding their treatment. Hygienists must be able to explain these procedures in terms that the patient can understand.
Hygienists must be able to communicate the value of proposed treatments in terms of immediate as well as long term benefits to the patient. If our patients understand why we are recommending something they are more likely to follow through.
Hygienists are also asked to identify, explain, and propose cosmetic procedures such as crowns and veneers, Invisalign, and tooth whitening procedures. Everyone wants a great smile and our hygiene team should be a great resource when our patients need to be informed of their options.
Hygienists are expected to stay current regarding new procedures, techniques, and materials via Continuing education courses. We offer multiple CE opportunities at our office throughout the year. We expect Hygienists to keep a valid license and have good standing with the Kentucky Board of Dentistry at all times during employment with us.
