Job Summary:
The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) provides therapy services under a licensed physical therapist’s direction, following a physician’s plan of care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in evaluating patients’ muscle strength, range of motion, coordination, gait, and daily living activities.
- Implement therapy programs per the physical therapist’s plan, consulting on progress with therapists and physicians.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including therapists, nurses, and social workers.
- Educate patients and families on treatment goals, adaptive equipment, and home exercise programs.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and submit required documentation within 48 hours of patient visits.
- Administer therapeutic exercises, gait training, mobility exercises, and non-complex modalities as allowed under New Mexico's Physical Therapy Practice Act.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, infection control, and agency policies.
- Participate in professional development at least twice annually.
Working Conditions:
- Field-based role requiring travel to patient homes.
- Exposure to varying environments, infectious diseases, and potential safety hazards.
- Must have reliable transportation for patient visits.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree from an APTA-accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
- Licensed PTA in New Mexico per state board requirements.
- Minimum 1 year of clinical physical therapy experience (home health preferred).
- CPR certification required.
