Position Overview
The Over-Dimensional Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and professional operation of company equipment and drivers handling flatbed, step-deck, RGN, and heavy haul freight. This position focuses on advanced cargo securement, over-dimensional regulations, and driver compliance. The specialist will also play a key role in driver onboarding and orientation, reinforcing company safety culture, and ensuring all new hires meet both DOT and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expertise in flatbed, heavy haul, and over-dimensional cargo securement, including chains, binders, tarping, and specialized trailer configurations.
- Conduct hands-on securement training and classroom instruction during onboardingand ongoing safety programs.
- Inspect driver loads, equipment, and securement practices to ensure compliance with FMCSA, state, and local regulations.
- Assist with new driver orientation, including modules on securement, trip planning, permits, HOS, PPE, and load configurations.
- Conduct field audits, ride-alongs, and yard inspections to enforce compliance and support professional development.
- Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance to identify and correct unsafe equipment or behaviors.
- Perform post-incident and roadside inspection reviews, issuing corrective action plans as needed.
- Maintain accurate training and audit documentation within the company safety systems.
- Assist in developing and updating securement manuals, driver guides, and orientation materials.
- Participate in safety meetings, driver coaching, and safety improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of flatbed, heavy haul, or over-dimensional transport experience.
- Expert knowledge of cargo securement best practices and oversize/overweight regulations.
- Strong familiarity with FMCSA regulations (Parts 383, 391, 393, and 395).
- Experience with pulling permits, route planning, and pilot/escort coordination is a plus.
- Prior safety, training, or compliance experience preferred.
- CDL Class A preferred (not required but strongly beneficial).
- Strong communication and coaching skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety/ELD systems.
- Willingness to travel for field inspections, training, and incident support.
