Vanderwell is an Alberta, family-owned company that has been operating in northern Alberta for more than 80 years. We have modern sawmill, planer mill, and pellet mill facilities, which produce dimensional lumber, wood pellets, shavings, and chips for wholesale customers.

We’re a major employer in the local region, we have more than 160 employees working throughout the operation -- mill production, sales & shipping, woodlands, truck and mobile equipment shops, and administration. Contract and part-time employees are also employed in maintenance, transportation, and seasonal activities.

The Opportunity

We are currently looking for individuals who are interested in the opportunity of becoming a Casual Weekend Clean Up employee for our manufacturing facilities in Mitsue Industrial Park. Job duties include:

Sweeps floors and clears debris from work areas, walkways, and from around equipment
Cleans and sprays work areas with water prior to hot work
Participates in spark watch
Uses air wands to blow down dust and debris from hard to reach areas
Checks and lubricates machinery bearings as per provided schedule
Monitors oil levels in gear boxes and refills as required
Inspects grease lines to ensure grease is reaching bearings; services as required
Lubricates drive chains as per schedule
Empties garbage receptacles, cleans tools and parts shelves
Paints shop shelves, cabinets, and steps as required
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Working Conditions:

Exposed to noise, dust, falling debris, moving machinery, weather extremes, splinters, slipping and tripping hazards
Lifting heavy, awkward objects and climbing on equipment is frequently required
Required use of the appropriate PPE for the task and working conditions

Must have:

A solid work ethic, be eager to learn, and be a team player
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to Mitsue Industrial Park
Preference given to candidates with previous work experience in a industrial or manufacturing setting in a safety sensitive role
Mill experience is an asset, but not required
Proficient written and verbal communication skills
A valid first aid certificate is preferred
Available to work a variety of shifts including: day, nights, or weekends

Our History

Vanderwell is one of Alberta’s founding lumber companies, first established in 1943. We started as a small seasonal logging and sawmill operation based in the Keephills area, south of Wabamun Lake. Since then, we have grown and moved locations until 1978, when our entire operation settled into the Slave Lake area where we continue today.

We have always believed in supporting our communities. We are proud to support and be part of the Slave Lake Friendship Centre’s Holiday Hamper and Santa’s Anonymous. We have donated lumber to the Slave Lake Fire Department for some building projects. Vanderwell has supplied, and continues to supply, the lumber for the industrial education classes at Roland Michener Secondary School in Slave Lake as well as many other schools in our community.
