LAND SURVEY PARTY CHIEF Department: Survey Reports To: Land Surveyor Division Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Status: Full-time; Hourly / Commensurate with capabilities/merit based wage increases and bonuses.

SUMMARY Senior survey party chiefs perform complex land surveying activities and must have a sound foundation in the practices and procedures of land survey techniques.  Incumbents resolve conflicts, solve problems, train subordinates, and lead a team of land survey personnel in field operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the duties and responsibilities performed.

  • Leads and participates in a variety of land survey operations such as boundary, topography, design, as-built, and maintaining horizontal and vertical control networks utilizing a full range of survey equipment
  • Prepares and verifies mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering; computes and adjusts angles, distances, bearings, traverses, and elevations; interprets and computes field data, and evaluates for accuracy and completeness; maintains accurate survey- and non-survey-related records in the form of field notes, reports, and sketches; maintains vertical and horizontal control notes in files, field book, and computer
  • Secures equipment, uses safety techniques, performs the survey operation, handles the equipment, records data, and performs other associated duties for the purpose of delivering a successful project
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records, logs, diaries, and/or other related documentation
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public concerning surveying activities
  • Tracks and maintains survey supplies such as stakes and marking equipment; ensures safety devices are present and in use as appropriate; may place traffic control devices and/or direct traffic
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Day to day supervision of A field survey crew.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   Knowledge of:

  • Mathematical principles
  • Automated surveying software
  • Field survey methods and techniques
  • Land survey terminology
  • Safe work methods
  • Customer service principles

Skilled in:

  • Experience with total stations both standard and robotic
  • Reduction of raw field data
  • AutoCAD a plus
  • Trimble GPS Equipment
  • Using a computer and related software applications

Ability to:

  • Read graphic instructions
  • Read construction plans and specifications
  • Training subordinates on work methods
  • Prepare reports and written documents, including charts, schedules, and maps
  • Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or G.E.D.; additional coursework in surveying, engineering technology, or mathematics; and five years of survey-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.  CERTIFICATIONS Must have at the time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Arizona Driver License. CST or LSIT a plus but not required. MSHA or OSHA certification a plus but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must be able to work outdoors, year round, whether hot, cold, wet or otherwise.

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.   Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

 WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

The work will occur primarily in an outdoor environment.  Incumbents may be subjected to fumes, odors, dust, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.  The work is safety sensitive and full and complete mental faculties are required at all times while on duty.
